Whether you want to make a real change in direction for your business or indeed thinking of your retirement exit strategy, then you may feel daunted by the challenge ahead. And that is totally natural. Instinctively, there is a tendency not to rock the boat and to ”be grateful for what you’ve got”, however that won’t result in growing your business!
What is for sure, is that if you keep doing what you’ve always done… you’ll keep getting the same results. Nowadays, however, there are few businesses that can afford to stand still. Your competitors (existing and new ones) will be improving continually, so if you stand still, you will effectively be going backwards! Our 3 top tips can help you take that sometimes scary step …… and succeed!
As a consultant, our priority is to add value to our clients’ business, an example of this is demonstrated by a 2 year contract, recently completed, as Managing Director of Collectively Camberley, a town centre Business Improvement District.
Tip 1 Plan – “to fail to plan, is to plan to fail” (Winston Churchill WW11) establishing a 100 day plan early on is key. This is based on initial analysis of what’s happening right now and focusing on your business objectives. The resulting document is often a very simple 1 page document, but it is crucial. It defines top priorities, sets a clear structure and short-term timescales for “achievable chunks” of work.
Tip 2 Passion – be true to yourself and listen to your instinct. As the owner of your business, you are the best expert on what your customers want and what you would really feel is possible. Yes, listen to experts in areas where you are not experienced, but follow your heart and head too ultimately. . There is a lot of hard work and often a time-lag before you will start reaping the benefits, so being passionate and having that self-belief is vital to persevering.
Tip 3 Promotion – firstly check whether everyone in your business know “what is it we do?” It’s common to get very different responses. It might sound really obvious but getting your internal communication right is essential before worrying about promoting your products/services to the outside world. Once agreed and shared with staff, then, and only then, can you start to consider how to promote the “raison d’être” to your key stakeholders, and customers
